UNITED WAY OF KNOX COUNTY SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR DAY OF CARING

Volunteers are needed for the United Way of Knox County’s Day of Caring scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2011. Your business, church, organization, or school group is cordially invited to participate in the United Way of Knox County’s Day of Caring.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in Abingdon and Altona.  Pre-registration is encouraged; however, registration will be from 8:00-8:30 a.m. at Rotary Park in Abingdon, Illinois and 8:00-8:30 a.m. at the park in Altona, Illinois.  At 8:30 a.m., volunteers will be welcomed and given instructions on the morning’s projects.    Volunteers will be asked to help with painting of fences and swing sets, repairing and painting park benches, assembling park equipment, weeding, and general cleanup of the parks.
The Day of Caring is a day set aside to mobilize community members in volunteerism right here in Knox County.  “We are so excited to get this project off the ground this year,” said Ann Tucker, executive director of the United Way of Knox County.  “This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone – children and adults – to come out and experience the sense of accomplishment and achievement while helping our community. We hope to grow this event and help even more communities in the years to come.”
All volunteers are encouraged to pre-register with the United Way of Knox County by calling the United Way office at 343-4434 or sending an email to uway@bbwave.net.

Thanks to Nees Harley Davison for their donation to United Way of Knox County and to all the volunteers that came to help with this event!

National Letter Carriers Food Drive
Each year the Letter Carriers and United Way band together to help the needy in our community.  The 2009 year's food drive raised over 17,500 lbs of food and the proceeds were given to FISH, the local food pantry serving all of Knox County citizens in need.

Share-A-Tree Program
Each year Target donates decorated Christmas trees to local not-for-profit organizations.  Through a partnership with the United Way of Knox County, all 501(c)3 organizations are given an opportunity to request one of the trees.  We salute the Target team for their enthusiasm and generous holiday gifts!

Holiday spirit at Target
James (Terry) See, Galesburg Trainmaster, Cherie McClusky Galesburg Human Resources Manager and Ann Tucker, Executive Director, Knox County United Way.
On June 11, 2008, the Chicago Division annual golf outing was held at Kewanee Dunes, in Kewanee, Illinois.  The event was organized for the 8th year in a row by Trainmaster James (Terry) See (Galesburg) and his wife, Cookie.  Seventy six golfers participated in the event consisting of both scheduled and exempt employees, contractors and vendors.

This year, Human Resources Manager, Cherie McClusky (Galesburg), sponsored a 50/50 raffle with proceeds benefiting the Knox County United Way.  United Specialties Services of Galesburg, was the lucky winner of the drawing and graciously donated their half of the cash back to United Way.

Thanks to the contractors, vendors and employees of BNSF, a check for $286.00 was received by Ann Tucker, Executive Director, Knox County United Way.
Christmas Donations
The Knox County Association, Home & Community Education donated Linus blankets to Catholic Charities to distribute to clients as Christmas presents.

Caring Connections
The United Way of Knox County partners with The Register-Mail in sponsoring Caring Connections.  If you or someone you know has a need that cannot be met by conventional means, ask your church or a local human service agency to send the request to the United Way of Knox County.  It will then be printed in The Register-Mail so that anyone who can donate the item or provide assistance will be able to contact your agency.

Emergency Food & Shelter Program
The EFSP Board, made up of seven human service agencies, distributes thousands of dollars for food, housing and utility assistance to people confronted by hunger and homelessness.
